MORE TRANSFERS NEEDED

Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini has said that he is hoping that the club was even more active in the summer transfer window. Newcastle have made some shrewd signings in the summer transfer window after finishing in fifth position last season.

Many are expecting that Newcastle will be able to kick on from this finish and qualify for the Champions League this time around. Even though Fabricio Coloccini accepts that it is quite to be extremely tough in order to do that, he is hoping that the signings that the club make in the summer transfer window prove to be essential towards this cause.

The Newcastle United captain is likely to see the return of Andy Carroll to Tyneside. The Liverpool striker moved to Anfield in 2011 for a transfer fee of £ 35 million, but his value has decreased rapidly after not performing well in these 18 months. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew recently revealed that he would like to bring the striker back to St James’s Park, but only on a loan deal. However, he has said that the loan deal would be made permanent in the summer his Andy Carroll rediscovered his scoring touch. Liverpool, though, are insisting upon a permanent deal.

“We’ll have to wait and see, but I hope so. It is going to be interesting. Hatem and Yohan are back now, too. That can only boost our players here. We want to see them back and fit again. It was good to be back. The pitch was heavy and it was tough because of the rain. We were disappointed to concede a goal in the last minute. But we have to pull out the positive things,” said the Newcastle United defender after the 1-1 draw with Turkish club Fenerbahce in a friendly match.

CITY CHASE COLOCCINI

Manchester City are looking at the possibility of securing Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini in the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old has impressed for Newcastle United in the last four seasons after arriving at the club back in 2008.

Even though he was initially criticised for his poor performances, he has grown to be one of the best defenders in the country. Manchester City secured the signature of Joleon Lescott from Everton many seasons ago, but it is thought that manager Roberto Mancini does not see him as a top player. As a result, he wants to replace Joleon Lescott with either Fabricio Coloccini or Daniel Agger.

The Liverpool defender has also been linked with a move away from the club after seeing the club failed to get the Champions League football for the third consecutive season. Daniel Agger has been at the club for many seasons, but the Danish international has revealed that he wants to play in the Champions League football more regularly. Manchester City recently won the Premier league title and they will be looking to target to do well in the Champions League this season. They have been knocked out of the competition at very early stages in the last couple of seasons.

Joleon Lescott has not been performing at his best in the European competitions. The England defender was once again not at his best with the national team at the Euro 2012. Prior to the start of the New Year, it was thought that Lescott would be offered a new contract along with James Milner and Gareth Barry. However, his poor form in the second half of the season has introduced certain confusion amongst the board. They are prepared to sell him if the fee, which is thought to be around £ 12 million, is right.

COLOCCINI STILL CONFIDENT

Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini has said that the club are still confident of finishing in the top four, which will provide them Champions League football after many seasons.

Newcastle last qualified for the Champions League while they were under the stewardship of the late Bobby Robson. Since then, they have been relegated to the Championship and have just been promoted back to the Premier league.

They were not expected to be in the top half of the table, but they have defied expectations to reach the lofty heights of the top four. However, the 4-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan during the weekend has seriously damaged their hopes of finishing ahead of Tottenham and Chelsea.

Yet, Newcastle defender and captain Fabricio Coloccini has said that the club are still confident ahead of the crucial match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. Newcastle will be making the trip to London after having just been beaten by Wigan.

This was their first defeat in the last six matches. Newcastle came into the match against Wigan having won the six matches prior to it, but looked totally out of sorts against Roberto Martinez’ men. After facing Chelsea, Newcastle will be up against the tough fixture in the form of Manchester City on Sunday.

“The Champions League is like a dream for us. We still have a chance to fight for it. We’re having a great season, so our confidence is still high. We know we have to get something at Chelsea. We know a Europa League place is in the bag, so we can push for a top-four finish. Wigan was a test for us and we were disappointing. Now we’ve three more tests,” Fabricio Coloccini said ahead of the meeting with Chelsea on Wednesday night.
